ACOC Face to Face Meeting 2008
ACOC briefly discussed a date for the 2008 meeting. Deirdre noted that the responses to drafts need to be submitted by mid-March, so mid-February would be preferable.
Action: Ebe to look at some potential dates and circulate via emailOutcomes of JSC meeting (Discussion led by Deirdre)
Deirdre explained that the JSC Face to Face meetings are no longer long enough to cover all the agenda items. JSC are hoping to get COP approval for longer meetings.
Chapter 3 was not discussed, and only the parts of Chapters 6 and 7 that needed resolution before the release of the December draft were discussed.
As outlined on the JSC website, the October meeting looked at issues in what is now the former Part B. In particular, Deirdre noted:
- Initial articles – JSC will make it clear when a decision has been constrained by implementation issues.
- Treaties and International agreements – Deirdre now has a contact in the Law Librarians community who is willing to offer comment on these and other rules relating to legal documents.
- MARC – a MARBI paper will be released in December. Bemal Rajapatirana from the National Library is looking into possible changes to MARC required by Part B, which will feed into the paper.
Action: Deirdre to circulate MARBI paper when it is released.
New RDA Structure
ACOC discussed the revised structure that was agreed to at the JSC meeting. Deirdre noted that the structure was accepted quickly by the meeting, and was also well received by the observers at the meeting.
ACOC agreed with the overall structure of attributes first, then relationships, but expressed some concern about:
- the designation of user task categories.
It was felt that most attributes were not confined to one user task. Perhaps it should be made clearer that the user task assigned is the “Principle user task”
- the structure under “Recording attributes”.
There was some doubt as to whether this structure would be useful to cataloguers, especially if based on the categorisation of attributes in terms of associated user tasks
Deirdre noted that the upcoming drafts are due out in mid-December and will need to be discussed at the 2008 Face-to-Face meeting, with comments submitted to JSC by mid-March.
