Aerial Photograph Collection

by Maura O'Connor, Map Curator, National Library of Australia

Note: This is an edited version of an article 'Aerial Photograph Collections in Australia' which originally appeared in The Australian Surveyor, vol. 37 (4), December 1992.

Acquired chiefly through donation, the National Library of Australia's collection of aerial photographs housed in the Map Section consists of around 700,000 stereoscopic black and white contact prints covering most of Australia flown between 1928 and 1983. Both vertical and some obliques (TRIMET) are represented. The collection comprises Commonwealth photography flown by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), ADASTRA Airways, the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) and the Australian Surveying and Land Information Group (AUSLIG).

The collection is arranged according to the Australian 1:63 360 topographic sheet numbering system and has been indexed and further matched with AUSLIG's microfiche flight diagram index. A complete set of imperial and metric topographic map series complements the photographs which may be viewed by a TOPCON Mirror Stereoscope, Model 3 with a 6x binocular viewer.

Access to the collection is through the Map Reading Room. Telephone, fax and written enquiries are also welcome. Enquiries should be directed to:
