The appointment of businessman Ryan Stokes as new chair of the National Library of Australia Council marked an important chapter in the institution’s history, Director General of the National Library, Ms Anne-Marie Schwirtlich, said today.

Ms Schwirtlich was welcoming Mr Stokes on his first official visit to the National Library as Council chair.

‘Mr Stokes, with his particular interest in digital technology, understands the role ahead for cultural institutions like the National Library and the challenges we face in ensuring that our collections of today are available for future generations to enjoy,’ she said.

Announcing the appointment last month, Arts Minister Simon Crean said Mr Stokes had already shown leadership in driving digital content and developing the digital economy.

‘This experience will assist the National Library as it continues to open up its collection through digitisation,’ Mr Crean said. ‘Mr Stokes will bring a wealth of business, media and entrepreneurial expertise to the chair’s position.’
