Curious Minds

Curious Minds: The Discoveries of Australian Naturalists brings to life the work of naturalists who scoured Australia in search of new plants and animals. Identifying the unfamiliar plants and animals was their biggest challenge—the early ones were frequently wrong but later naturalists were able to build on and learn from previous mistakes. In time, a new breed of home-grown naturalists emerged. This succession of curious minds, including John and Elizabeth Gould, Ellis Rowan and Ludwig Leichardt, would help to foster pride in a developing nation, as well as an interest in the preservation of natural history. Curious Minds, by award-winning writer Peter Macinnis, is illustrated with images from the National Library of Australia collection.
