Cage of GhostsPhotographs by Jon Rhodes27 September – 25 November Cage of Ghosts, curated by Jon Rhodes, one of Australia’s most important documentary photographers, consists of 36 sets of powerful b&w photographs that document the surviving physical evidence of Aboriginal occupation of southeast Australia. Scarred trees in the front gardens of suburban Canberra; rock engraving sites across Sydney; ceremonial places next to golf courses, houses and roads; carved trees placed in NSW schools and museums; and painted caves in the Grampians protected from vandalism, are a statement about what our modern society, in its desire to preserve Aboriginal cultural places, has created. In attempting to preserve the sites, some have become ‘caged’, by metal or wooden frames for protection, several have been moved and others co-exist with other public spaces, but in all instances changes in appearance, context and meaning have occurred. Rhodes’ evocative and provocative images serve to challenge existing ideas and inspire new ways of thinking. NOTE: All images are in high resolution JPEG format approximately A4 @ 300dpi
