Donald Friend—A Charmed LifeDonald Friend (1915–1989) was a painter, draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor, illustrator and writer as well as a traveller and satirist with acute powers of observation. His lifestyle attracted as much comment as his work. Containing 155 works from private collections and national institutions, Donald Friend–A Charmed Life takes the viewer to Hill End, depicts Friend’s life as an official war artist, and traces his time overseas in London, Ceylon and Bali and in his hometown Sydney. The highlight of the exhibition is the inclusion of 44 of Friend’s diaries from the National Library’s collection. On display for the first time, the diaries are a mixture of gifted writing and magnificent watercolour, pen and ink, and gouache drawings of some of the people, places and events that influenced his life, as well as studies for his paintings. 9 November 2006 – 4 February 2007 NOTE:
