The System of Nature: Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778)

Visitor Centre

19 October 2007 – 6 April 2008

This display commemorates the tercentenary of the birth of Carl Linnaeus, arguably the most influential natural scientist of the 18th century. Often referred to as 'the father of taxonomy', Linnaeus established systems of biological and botanical classification that are still followed today. Two of his 'disciples' were prominent in the early documentation of the flora and fauna of Australia - Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander who were on board the Endeavour with James Cook when it arrived in Botany Bay in 1770. His influence and associations are revealed through magnificent watercolours, portraits, prints and manuscripts.
