About this study

In June 1994, the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Science and Technology commissioned Cutler & Company Pty Ltd to undertake research into the capabilities of Australian industry for multimedia production. A consulting team was assembled and extended funding support put in place:

Manager:

Subcontractors:

Advisors:

Funding Support:

The study involved an eight week period of field activity, involving extensive interviews and consultations with industry participants. In all over 150 detailed interviews with industry players and commentators were conducted, and a number of special market surveys were undertaken. In the course of finalising the study numerous briefings were held with departmental officers in Canberra during late August and early September 1994.

This document is adapted from those briefings and separate working documentation prepared for the Department, particularly with respect to market opportunities in the region. It summarises the industry issues and analysis that has been presented to Government for its consideration. It should be noted that the views expressed in this document are those of the consultants and do not necessarily reflect those of Department, CSIRO, BSEG, or of Government.

A more leisurely timetable would have enlarged the presentation of detailed analysis, and done more justice to the wealth of material and insights collected during this study. We believe, however, that the main lines of argument presented here go to the heart of the challenges associated with interactive multimedia industry development in Australia.
