Copying Manuscript Material
Copyright
The Copyright Act 1968 allows libraries to photocopy unpublished material held in their collections if the material is required for research purposes, but only if the creator of the material has been dead for more than 50 years. For material which does not meet this criterion, researchers must obtain the written permission of the copyright holders of the material. This restriction does not apply to official records, which are covered by Crown copyright.
You should note that in signing a photocopy declaration form you are agreeing to use the copies for the purpose of research only.
Permission to Publish
Should you wish to publish material from the Library's manuscript collections, you will need to obtain permission from the Library as custodian of the material. You will also need to obtain copyright clearance from any copyright holders. You will need to provide an accompanying citation which acknowledges the National Library as custodian, and includes the location number of the item.
