The collection was acquired in three instalments: the first and second consignments (Series 3 & 4) were donated to the National Library by Parliamentary Library in 1988; while the latter was donated by Souter in 1992 under the Tax Incentives for the Arts Scheme.

The papers comprise correspondence, drafts, typescripts, research material and photographs for Souter's published works: New Guinea: the last unknown, Lion and kangaroo: the initiation of Australia, 1909-1919, Acts of Parliament: a narrative history of the Senate and House of Representatives Commonwealth of Australia, Company of Heralds: a century and a half of Australian publishing by John Fairfax Limited and its predecessors, 1831-1981 and Heralds and angels: the house of Fairfax 1841-1990.

Also included are the manuscript of an unpublished book 'Cocos: a history of the Clunies Ross Family', and miscellaneous items pertaining to the Australian Society of Authors and the Films Board of Review.

Biographical Note

Gavin Souter was born in Sydney in 1929. He graduated from Sydney University.

Souter worked as a journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald (1947-87). He was commissioned to write the bicentennial history of the Commonwealth Parliament (1983-87) and histories of John Fairfax Limited (1978-81; 1987-90). His other appointments included Vice President of the Australian Society of Authors (1975-78) and Deputy Chairman of the Commonwealth Films Board of Review (1981-84).

Souter's publications include New Guinea: the last unknown (1963), Lion and Kangaroo: the initiation of Australia (1976), Acts of Parliament: a narrative history (1988), Company of Heralds (1981) and Heralds and angels: the house of Fairfax 1841-1992 (1992).

Series 1 - New Guinea: the last unknown (Published by Angus and Robertson, 1963)

The series comprises handwritten drafts.

Series 2 - Lion and Kangaroo: the initiation of Australia, 1901-1919 (Published by Collins, 1976)

The series includes drafts, typescripts, correspondence (1975-76), notes and photocopies.
The correspondents include Pat Lane, Cyril A. Parry, J.A. La Nauze, Sir Garfield Barwick, Margaret Murphy and N.J. Flanagan.

Series 3 - Acts of Parliament: a narrative history, 1981-88 (Published by Melbourne University Press, 1988)

Souter received a commission to write the history of the Commonwealth Parliament between 1983 and 1987. This series contains papers pertaining to the book, including correspondence, drafts, typescripts, card files and photocopies.
The main correspondents are Peter Ryan, Manning Clark, Anne Lynch, Ken Inglis, J.A. La Nauze, E.G. Whitlam and Sir Garfield Barwick.

Series 4 - Research material for Acts of Parliament: a narrative history (Published by Melbourne University Press, 1988)

The files in this series, correspondence, research material and photographs, came from the Parliamentary Library.

Series 5 - Company of Heralds: a century and a half Australian publishing by John Fairfax Limited and its predecessors, 1831-1981

Souter was commissioned by John Fairfax Limited to write a history of their company. This small series contains correspondence with members of the company, including Max Suich; Manning Clark, Ken Inglis, Tom Goodman, N. Adcock and Michael Davie (1978-86).

Series 6 - Heralds and angels: the house of Fairfax 1841-1992

This series contains handwritten drafts, typescripts, research material and photocopies relating to Souter's second book on John Fairfax and sons.

Series 7 - 'Cocos: a history of the Cocos (Keeling ) Islands and the Clunies Ross Family' (Restricted)

Souter was commissioned by John Clunies-Ross to write a history of Cocos (Keeling) Islands, but it has not yet been published. The series contains the complete handwritten manuscript.

Series 8 - Australian Society of Authors, 1987-88

The series comprises newsletters and miscellaneous printed material.

Series 9 - Films Board of Review, 1981-84

Souter served as Deputy Chairman of the Films Board of Review between 1981 and 1984. The very small series contains correspondence, minutes and miscellaneous printed material. The correspondents include Peter Durack, Lionel Bowen and R. Kingsland.
