call from Dr Harden. 'He wanted to warn me that Mr Brian
Austin (Queensland Health Minister) had called a press
conference, and that the story that the babies had died
as a result of being transfused with my blood would be
hitting the television screens that night... Steve said
he seriously considered suicide 'It seemed the only way
that I would ever be able to get away from the deaths of
those babies. In addition it was reported that the parents
of the babies were going to get together, publicly identify
me and have me charged with manslaughter....I didn't
deliberately set out to kill anyone, and, according to
the information which was available on AIDS at the time,
I had not acted irresponsibly.' Steve now has Category
A AIDS. He has the skin cancer, Karposi's Sarcoma, and
lymphadenopathy, which is symptomatic of AIDS. But he
says that despite this, his health generally is very
good...."
