File Note 1986.03.17
From: Weir G
A most disappointing outcome as I saw humour as a good
and effective vehicle in an AIDS education campaign.
Much better than the use of fear. This concept was
in stark contrast to that taken by the Grim Reapers AIDS
campaign of 1987. 'Tim and Debbie' were very popular
comic characters who appealed to young and sexually active
people.
This failure underlined the structural difficulty within
the Queensland AIDS Committee. I was unaware of any
developments following my initial contact with Lord,
then this surprising letter was sent to me. No discussion
or approach involving me took place, therefore receiving
this letter was somewhat of a shock. QAC was painfully
embryonic and haphazard.
I took no further action on this campaign, as my very
frequent interstate would not allow me to oversee the
development as much as would appear to be necessary.
