File Note 1979.03.15
From: Weir G
The contact point for the groups was the Offices of the Unemployed Workers Union. The people
involved in the Union were also heavily involved in Civil Liberties Campaign. The offices, in the
Trades and Labor Council Hall (Edward Street), were often used as meeting and working venues
for the civil liberties campaigns. It was because of this involvement and the work of the Unemployed
Workers Union that it was later given a vote in the Queensland Trades and Labor Council. Also at
this stage Senator George Georges had offered to assist in the office during his time in Brisbane
(perhaps in part for more Machiavellian motives through his activities in the ALP reform group).
The offer was never taken up. For more material on this period refer to Unemployed Workers
Union Archive and Civil Liberties Campaign Archive sections of this collection.

"Educators will get the message that we will only allow wholesome, decent, practical material
in schools. And we want the Department, whoever is there, to get a clear understanding this is
what the Government intends to happen.... there is someone over there (Education Department)
who does not seem to know what the Government wants to be taught in schools. Mr Bird is a good
Minister and trying to overcome very complex problems. But the trend of recent years seem to
have changed, in certain areas to what it was." [Courier Mail 23.3.1978 Quoted QTU document
