I was asked by him to apply for a vacancy in his Brisbane office in February

The rally which was used as the model for a series of national rallies which

Following the surprisingly good turn out for the Rally for Peace in Brisbane
I suggested to George Georges that we should turn this into a national rally.
Given my exposure to the national student union this was not an unexpected
suggestion. He agreed and I attended a meeting of AICD in Sydney in June
(or perhaps in July). At this meeting it was agreed to support national rallies
in 1982. This was later reinforced at a meeting held in December (refer to

A collection of letters supporting the National Rallies for Peace in 1982: These
include letters received from: Australian Peace Committee (NSW) - "At first there
was a feeling that it would be better to feature a day that was already connected
with the struggle for peace. However, there is a growing feeling that there is an
urgent need for some big demonstrative action in Australia. This can only take place
if there is a united effort by all peace forces. So we have decided to propose to the
UNAA Disarmament Committee here to set up a representative committee"; Association
for International Co-operation and Disarmament - "... we urge you to consider inviting
Senator Childs to participate in the meeting and become its independent chairperson.
We are sure that this would facilitate the work for massive demonstration in April";

The two quotes from the Australian Peace Committee and the Association for
International Co-operation and Disarmament reflect the division within the Peace
Movement between what was perceived as the Pro-Soviet peace movement and
the non-aligned peace movement. This division persisted in the early years of
the peace rallies. Diplomacy and sorting out truth from fiction was needed to get
the various groups to work together. It provided a sound grounding for working
within the 'gay community' during the period Queensland's homosexual law
reform of 1990.

case.... The meeting decided that most of the operations of the Greg Weir
Defence Campaign would be suspended, so that it would not detract from the
AUS committee fund raising efforts..."
File Note 1982.01.16
From: Weir G
It was clear by the final budget session of the Australian Union of Students
Council that there was very little guaranteed money in the coffers of the union.
Many of the long established social justice issue campaigns during the
session had been axed. The National Civil Council Faction and the Liberal
Students were ensuring that these campaigns were not funded. Some of the
protagonists were Peter Costello and Michael Kroger. After lots of soul
searching I formulated the motion. It did not make undue demands on the
finances of the union; it gave the opportunity to the union and the various
groups which have shown support to decide whether or not they wanted to
continue to provide support to the campaign; and it recognised that AUS
should take financial responsibility for the court case which it had implicitly
promised to support. People were surprised that it received unanimous
support. Like others I was also surprised at this support - but it was a
reasonable motion.

Letter 1983.04.12
From: Weir G Office of Senator Georges
To: Supporting organisations National Rallies
Seeking consideration of three proposals of national movement. It included
a proposal to continue national rallies
File Note 1983.04.12
From: Weir G
There had been moves to centralise the peace and nuclear disarmament
movement away from the coalition movement, reflected in the structures of the
rally, to a movement centred on People for Nuclear Disarmament. Moves were
made to this effect occurred at a national conference held in the middle of the
year in Canberra. At the conference the rallies were supported by organisations.
Melbourne PND stated they would not organise the 1984 rally, however
christian organisations from Melbourne subsequently said that they would organise
the rallies. There was a growing tension within the movement over the coming
years. In Queensland it lead to severe divisions. It took meticulous diplomacy and
negotiations to solve the organisational problems which this tension posed. This
coalition approach seemed to survive well in end as a viable model. So much so
that the Round Table Meeting of homosexual and lesbian groups held during the
Queensland Law Reform period of 1990 where modelled on this approach.
