Introduction
Scope and Contents
The bulk of the collection comprises edited draft manuscripts and typescripts of several of Condon's works. Also included are draft typescripts of some unpublished short stories, a small amount of correspondence with publishers, letters from the author Georgia Savage, publicity photographs, reviews and newspaper clippings.

Biographical Note
Matthew Condon is a journalist and an author. Born on 5 March 1962, he was educated at the University of Queensland, and studied German at the Goethe Institute, Bremen in Germany.
Condon began his career as a journalist with the Gold Coast Bulletin in 1982. From here he moved to the Brisbane Courier Mail, and then to the Sydney Sun-Herald, for a time as its London correspondent, and more recently in Sydney as literary editor.
Condon's first book, The motorcycle café, was published in 1988. Since then he has gone on to publish several works, as well as contribute short stories to collections, journals and newspapers.
Condon has received the following awards and grants for his work as an author:

- The motorcycle Café, shortlisted for the NSW State Literary Award for Fiction, 1989
- Literature Board of the Australia Council fellowship, 1990
- Usher, shortlisted for the Banjo Awards for Australian Literature, 1992
- A Night at the Pink Poodle, the Steele Rudd Award for Fiction, 1995
- Voted one of the Sydney Morning Herald's 10 best young Australian novelists, 1996

Series 1. Correspondence, 1987-95
This series comprises business correspondence, mainly with publishers, and a folder of letters to Condon from the author Georgia Savage. The principal correspondents include James Bradley, Carmen Callil (Chatto & Windus), Luke Davies, Liam Davison, Anthony Harwood (his agent), Jan Smark Nilsson (National Book Council), Bruce Pascoe (Pascoe Publishing), Bill Scott-Kerr (Picador), Tom Shapcott (Director, Literature Board of the Australia Council), and the University of Queensland Press.
Series 2. The motorcycle café, 1983-89
This series comprises papers relating to Condon's collection of short stories entitled The motorcycle café, published by University of Queensland Press, 1988 (159pp). They include edited drafts and correspondence, mainly with University of Queensland Press, regarding editing and publication of the book.
Series 3. Usher, 1987-92
This series comprises material relating to Condon's novel Usher, published by University of Queensland Press, 1991 (260pp). Included are notebooks, edited drafts and proofs, reviews and publicity photographs.

This series comprises papers relating to Condon's novel The ancient guild of tycoons, published by University of Queensland Press, 1994 (365pp). They include reviews and edited drafts and proofs.
Series 5. A night at the Pink Poodle, 1994-95
This series comprises papers relating to Condon's novel A night at the Pink Poodle, published by Arrow, 1995 (315pp); including reviews and an edited draft typescript.
Series 6. The lulu magnet, 1995-96
This series consists of typed drafts of Condon's book of short stories entitled The lulu magnet, published by Vintage Australia, 1996 (553pp).
Series 7. Smashed: Australian drinking stories, 1996
This series comprises papers relating to a book of short stories entitled Smashed: Australian drinking stories, edited by Matthew Condon and Richard Lawson and published by Random House, 1996 (520pp). They include draft typescripts, edited galley proofs and some correspondence.
Series 8. Other writings, 1994-97
This series comprises a miscellaneous collection of draft typescript of short stories.
Series 9. Miscellaneous papers, 1991-93
A collection of miscellaneous papers including payment advice notes (1991) and a publishing agreement for The ancient guild of tycoons from Curtis Brown, newspaper clippings, and the draft typescript of a short story entitled Mister fake together with a copy of Australian Book Review (1992) in which it appeared.
