Introduction

Scope and Contents

The collection includes correspondence, photographs, notes, research material (primarily photocopies) and manuscript drafts relating to the researching and writing of Cochrane's book Simpson and the donkey: the making of a legend (1992). The research material gathered by Cochrane documents the life and legend of stretcher-bearer John Simpson Kirkpatrick, who died in the Gallipoli campaign of World War I. Among the correspondents are Ken Inglis, Bill Gammage, Jim Henderson, Humphrey McQueen, John Hirst, John Herouvim, Peter Stanley, Barry York, Alan McLean, Craig Munro, Catherine Snowden, Ian Duffield, Chris Pugsley, Barry York, Ann Richter, Renata Howe and Michael Sharkey.(4 boxes).

The Acc10.042 instalment comprises correspondence, research notes, edited chapters, copies of news clippings and awards material relating to Cochrane's book Colonial ambition: foundations of Australian democracy (2006); notes and writing for the TV documentary "The making of modern Australia"; notes, speeches and reviews related to the production of the National Library of Australia's centenary volume Remarkable occurrences (2001); correspondence and notes regarding the 2009 New South Wales Premier's History Awards (8 boxes).

MS Acc18.138 comprises additional papers relating to two of Cochrane's books published in 2018 - 'Best we forget: the war for white Australia 1914-1918' and 'The making of Martin Sparrow' and include annotated drafts and correspondence with editors, historians and the media.(3 boxes).

Provenance

The papers were donated to the Library by Dr Peter Cochrane in October 1997. Further papers were added in 2010.

The Library also holds records relating to the periodical Bowyang, which Cochrane co-edited with Humphrey McQueen, at MS 6511.
