The papers were received by the Library in 1991. They were once part of
the collection of the Womens Studies Unit at the Australian National
University.
The papers consist mainly of secondary source material relating to
womens issues. They include journal articles, newscuttings, notes,
papers, reports, information circulars and womens journals. A substantial
amount of the research material (6 folders) has been collected on the campaigns
for equal pay for women both in Australia and overseas. Other subject files
include women and the media, women in the Australian Public Service and
womens organisations. There are also papers from womens conferences
and miscellaneous copies of various womens journals and newsletters.
The collection was arranged in files with titles when received by the
Library. The arrangement of papers within these files and the file titles have
been preserved by the Library.
Other papers originally part of the Womens Archive and now held by
the National Library include those of Beryl Henderson (MS
9360), Edna Ryan (MS 9140), and Thelma Hunter
(MS 9353).
Teacher, historian and feminist. Julia Ryan is the daughter of Edna
Ryan, feminist and campaigner for womens rights in Australia. Ryan lives
in Canberra where she has been active in the womens movement for many
years.

by Dorothy Peters, Rosalie Rosenfelt and Sandra Smith, Yvonne McComb and
Kathleen Taperell. There is also a series of background papers providing brief
summaries, lists of names and statistics of women in Parliament, the workforce
and other issues covered during the conference. The folder also contains four
newsletters of the Australian National Advisory Committee International
Womens Year, 1974-75 |

Canberra Womens Refuge, 1975-77. The majority of material
is statistical information gathered in 1975 on the use of the Refuge and its
clients. There is a small amount of correspondence, 1976-77, including a letter
written by Julia Ryan in April 1977 resigning from her position as Public
Officer for the Refuge. There is also a copy of the first newsletter produced
by the Canberra Womens Refuge |
