Scope and Content Note

Records

4.62 m (33 boxes) + 1 folio item and posters

Available for reference

The records of the Green Mill Dance Project were donated to the Library by the Project’s board in 1998 and by the Australian Dance Council (Ausdance) in July 2001.

The collection comprises archival records which relate to the formation and administration of the Green Mill Dance Project and the co-ordination, by the project, of an annual festival of dance between 1993 and 1997.

The records consist of administration files, financial records, board records, promotional material, photographs and slides and ephemera. They include correspondence with participants, suppliers, sponsors, venue managers and government authorities, minutes of meetings, grant applications, reports, statistics, programs, media releases, publicity material, posters and biographical notes on participants.

Selected papers from the 1994 and 1995 festivals were edited by Hilary Trotter and published by the Australian Dance Council (Ausdance), Canberra on Green Mill's behalf. Included in the collection are papers accumulated by Trotter in the process of editing the two publications Dance and narrative: the Green Mill Dance Project Papers, 1994 and Is Technology the future for dance? The Green Mill Project Papers, 1995.

The material provides a comprehensive record of the work of the project.

Most of the records had been arranged into files by the organisation, and the arrangement has been maintained by the Library.

Historical note

The Green Mill Dance Project was founded in 1992 by Shirley McKechnie, in response to a recommendation, made at the Australia Council’s National Dance Summit in Canberra in 1991, that an annual national dance forum be established. Based in Melbourne, the Green Mill Dance Project was established as a national dance event with an international perspective.

The inaugural festival of the Green Mill Dance Project was held in January 1993. Festivals were then held annually, with the last being held in 1997. The project ceased operations in March 1998 after the Victorian Government withdrew its funding. During the years of its operation, the Green Mill Dance Project festivals gained national and international significance.

The name of the project commemorates ‘The Green Mill’, a dance hall which opened in 1926 and became one of Melbourne’s most popular nightspots, before closing down during the Depression.
