Help us by correcting text.

Help us make the Australian Newspapers service better by correcting the electronically translated text (OCR). The text output of the automated computer process is poor because the original newspapers and the microfilm are of low quality and sometimes hard to read (as are historic newspapers in other countries). That means full text searching is not always accurate. However you can help make it better for everyone by checking the image of the newspapers page against the electronically translated text and making it accurate. Your changes are immediately saved to the database and searching is instantly improved. We are the first library in the world to give this innovation to the public. On 1st November 2009 just over a year since we released the service we had 6000+ people helping out and 7 million lines of text had been corrected. Great work! A big thank you to everyone. You can join in too. It is easy, intuitive and quick. You don't even need to register (though if you do you can keep a track of your progress). But beware, it can be a very addictive pastime.........

Website Owners and Librarians

Put a link to the Search Service on your website.

You can put a link to Australian Newspapers beta from your own website: http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/. (This url will have a permanent redirect on it if it changes in the future).

If you need a logo for your webpage link please download it from the NLA media zone: http://www.nla.gov.au/media/aust_newspapers/index.html

If you want to create flyers or posters please do so. Here is a small A5 flyer that can be printed 2 to an A4 sheet in colour: ANDP_Flyer_Nov2008

People or Organisations with Money

People Digitising Newspapers

Tell us what you have done

We'd like to be informed about current newspaper microfilming projects or hard copy digitisation of newspapers since these may be integrated into the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program in the future. If your library or organisation has already digitised Australian newspapers and is interested in sharing the files with the National Library of Australia, please contact us.

Tell us what you may do in the future

It is intended to include Australian Newspapers digitised by other organisations. A model for Contributors is being developed. The National Library has established a central storage infrastructure and is delivering Australian Newspapers through a single access point. If you are planning to digitise newspapers please refer to our current specification for scanning microfilm and our specification for Content Analysis and Optical Character Recognition which are available on the Project Details page. It will be important that Contributors create content to an agreed standard so that data can be included in the service and search and retrieval is consistent across all newspapers. In the first instance please contact the ANDP representative in the State in which you live, for more information about becoming a contributor. The state representative will co-ordinate approaches from councils, public libraries, historical societies and other organisations in their state and also forward relevant information to the ANDP team at the National Library of Australia.
