5 Million Newspaper Pages!

As of this week, we’re delivering 5 Million newspaper pages through the Trove. Thanks to our supporters, State and Territory Libraries and groups who have contributed content to the service (more information on how to contribute content can be found here).

17 million articles now available.

17 million articles are available to full-text search. By 2011 there will be a masssive 40 million articles available!

The Sydney Morning Herald now available!

Sydney Morning Herald issues from 1831 - 1954 are now publicly available. (The Sydney Herald 1831-1842 and The Sydney Morning Herald 1842-1954). We are currently digitising 3,500 missing issues (now found) from the run and these will be made available in mid 2010.

Australian Newspapers included in new 'Trove' service

Australian Newspapers is being integrated into the Library's Trove service. Trove provides a single access point to over 90 million resources of different types which can be searched simultaneously. More information about the integration here.

Crowdsourcing - public correct 12.5 million lines of text!

9000+ members of the public have corrected 12.5 million lines of newspaper text so far. A big thank you to all those people! The electronically translated text is often poor quality and needing improvement. If you improve the text it makes the text search better for everyone. Help join in with this activity. It is easy, fun and addictive.

Queenslander becoming available

The latest title to become available is the Queenslander.

The Melbourne Argus 1846-1945 complete

The Argus  (and its previous title the Melbourne Argus) from 1846 - 1945 are now completed and available. The remaining 10 years (1945-1954) of the Argus will be made available in 2010 (mid to end of year).

10 million articles now available.

The millionth page was made publicly available on 14 December 2009, marking a project milestone. The millionth page contained the 10 millionth article. This was a 1901 edition of the Sydney Morning Herald. There will be 40 million articles available by 2011. Digitisation continues at an increasing pace...

First 100 years of The Sydney Morning Herald now available!

The first 100 years of the Sydney Morning Herald are now publicly available. (The Sydney Herald 1831-1842 and The Sydney Morning Herald 1842-1931). Issues from 1932- 1954 will be added weekly over the next few months.

The Sydney Morning Herald now available!

On 1st November 2009 the first 20 years of the Sydney Morning Herald were made publicly available. (The Sydney Herald 1831-1842 and The Sydney Morning Herald 1842-1852). Issues from 1852- 1954 will be added weekly over the next few months.

New Content added to beta service

Processing and delivery of newspaper pages has now re-commenced and 51,000 pages were added into the beta service in May 2009. New pages will be progressively added each month to the beta service. As at 11 June 2009 4.3 million articles are now available and full-text searchable.

Improvement of Digital Content by Users

Australian Newspapers Beta users have corrected over 3.4 million lines of electronic text in over 150,000 articles. Over 70,000 tags have been added to articles and many comments about information in articles added. This is fantastic community activity which is improving the content for everyone.

1.95 million pages scanned

1 .95 million pages have been scanned from microfilm. A list of the titles and date ranges scanned is available from the Selected Newspapers page.

Inclusion in Google News Archive

Articles from the beta service have now been harvested and are available from the Google News Archive Search.

Inclusion in prototype Single Search Service

Australian Newspapers beta has been integrated into the Library's Single Search Service prototype model which is available to the public and open for feedback. You can search across mulitple resources in mulitple formats from one interface.

Digitisation of The Sydney Morning Herald

The Sydney Morning Herald 1831-1954 has now been digitised and is awaiting OCR processing. There are 600,000 pages containing approximately 6 million articles to be processed in 2009 - 2010, which will be made available progressively.
