New Director-General appointed
30 November 2016

Dr Marie-Louise Ayres has been appointed as the next Director-General of the National Library of Australia.

The Minister for the Arts, Senator Mitch Fifield, said Dr Ayres had been appointed for a five-year term.

Dr Ayres has served in senior management roles at the National Library since 2002. During that time, she led the development of transformative digital services.

Most recently, Dr Ayres has worked to increase the prominence of the National Library's collection by leading its online archive, Trove.

Dr Ayres' appointment will commence on 2 March, 2017. She replaces Ms Anne-Marie Schwirtlich, AM, who has held the position since 2011.

Senator Fifield thanked Ms Schwirtlich for her outstanding contribution to the direction of the National Library over the past six years.
