Basic search techniques

The National Library of Australia has a large collection of Australian and overseas newspapers. This guide explains how to search for newspapers using four basic search techniques.

To begin a catalogue search:

  1. Go to the National Library of Australia catalogue.
  2. Select one of the basic search techniques listed below.
  • Searching by exact title
  • Searching by keyword in title
  • Searching by call number
  • Searching for geographic locaton

Searching by exact title

Use this search technique when the exact newspaper or journal title is known. For example if searching for the Northern Territory News, this is what you would do:

  • Type the exact newspaper title (Northern Territory News) in the search box
  • Select Title using the drop down down arrow in the fields box
  • Choose Journal/Newspaper or Microform in the formats box
  • Click on the Find button

Searching by keyword in title

Use this search technique when the exact newspaper title is not known or only some of the words are known. For example if searching for the Australian Soccer Weekly and the known information was Australian and soccer, this is what you would do:

  • Type in keywords of the newspaper title (e.g. Australian +soccer) in the search box
  • Select All Fields in the fields box
  • Choose Journal/Newspaper or Microform in the formats box
  • Click on the Find button

Searching by call number

Use this search technique when the newspaper call number is known. For example if searching for The Canberra Times in microfilm format, this is what you would do:

  • Type in the exact call number in the search box (remember to put a space between the call number prefix and the number)
  • Select Call Number using the drop down arrow in the fields box
  • Choose Journal/Newspaper in the formats box
  • Click on the Find button

This technique saves time when you are regularly requesting the same item.

Searching by geographic location

Use this search technique when searching for newspapers from a particular area and you don't know any titles. For example if searching for Perth newspapers, this is what you would do:

  • Type in 'Perth newspapers' in the search box
  • Select Subject using the drop down arrow in the fields box
  • Choose Journal/Newspaper or Micorform in the formats box
  • Click on the Find button
