1. Aim

The aim of this report is to present accurate and up-to-date collection development information relating to South Asian library materials. A separate report which provides information on collection strengths in South Asian library collections, taken from the Australian Conspectus Database has also been prepared for the South Asia: Renovating the National Collection meeting.

Information in this report is taken from the Results of the DNC Asian Library Materials Survey December 1994 which was distributed by the DNC Office in February 1995, and revised in June 1995.

2. South Asian Countries

For the purpose of this report the countries of South Asia are defined as: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka.

4. Data Included in this Report

The following information on collection development was requested from those libraries who participated in the original survey of collections of Asian library materials:

Collection size/budget

Libraries were asked to provide information on the size and budget of the Asian library materials collections. Libraries were also asked if they had any exchange agreements/donation sources which regularly provide Asian library material.

Collection assessment

Libraries were asked to provide information on the methodology used to assess their collection, and which of the following levels best described their existing Asian materials collection.

  1. Introductory or basic material only
  2. Basic information supporting general enquiries
  3. Supports undergraduate and most graduate instruction
  4. Supports postgraduate and independent research
  5. Significant works of recorded knowledge, in all applicable languages

The survey was undertaken by the DNC Office in December 1994.
