First Roundtable on Library and Archives Collections and Services of Relevance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People

State Library of South Australia, Adelaide, 4 May 1995
Brief Report from Frances Awcock, Director, State Library of SA

This historic Roundtable, the first of its kind, took place on Thursday 4 May in Adelaide. Held at and hosted by the State Library of Australia in a building which is itself historic - the Institute Building of 1858 - the Roundtable drew participants from every Australian state and territory. Under the aegis of the Towards Federation 2001: Documenting Australia's Heritage national agenda, 30 staff (including 10 Aboriginal staff) from state and territory archival and library organisations considered issues relating to service provision (including staff training and recruitment and cross cultural awareness training), access with a focus on accessing archives, terminology and protocols for libraries, archives and information services.

The Roundtable resolved:

  1. That this Roundtable endorses the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Protocols for Libraries Archives and Information Services and asks each participant to recommend consideration of them for adoption in their own organisation.

  2. That each organisation represented at the Roundtable should report annually on the implementation of the Protocols.

  3. That this Roundtable seeks financial support, through the TF2001 mechanisms, for the completion of the Aboriginal Thesaurus for publication in 1996.
