First Roundtable on Library and Archives Collections and Services of Relevance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People
State Library of South Australia, Adelaide, 4 May 1995
Report
from State Library of Victoria
Since the recommendation of the TF2001 Review Meeting, the State Library of Victoria has engaged in the following activities:
RH1 The National, State and Territory Libraries and Archives and other collecting organisations establish advisory mechanisms which will result in improved access to documentary heritage by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
In September 1994 an advisory committee was established in the La Trobe Library for the Koori Oral History Program. The idea of this committee is to facilitate cross-cultural awareness, and to link the Koori community with the printed resources and other resources available in the State Library of Victoria. Suggestions arising from the advisory committee meetings will lead to the production of further bibliographies of particular interest to the Koori community.
RH2 "dissemination of information about holdings relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples; and that conditions of access and use be negotiated with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples."
The State Library of Victoria published the Aboriginal People of Victoria select bibliography of pre-1960 printed sources. This was widely disseminated in the Victorian Aboriginal Community via the field officers of Aboriginal Affairs Victoria. This publication has been very successful and volume 2 (of sources printed since 1960) is in preparation. The Koori Oral History Program situated at the State Library of Victoria has produced a listing of audio and video tape oral history material available for consultation in the Library. For ease of access, a copy of these listings is available at the la Trobe Reference Centre desk for any enquirier who may need access to this material. Audio and video tapes will be copied for any research requesting them, and particular attention is given to requests from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
A leaflet on the Koori Oral History Program has been printed to publicise the services as widely as possible. This leaflet is now in need of revision.
The Koori Historian has recently been nominated to the Selection Panel of the National Estate for selection of programmes deserving of State Government funding. His experience and knowledge of the State Library and its collection will be valuable for this task.
Aboriginal cross-cultural training co-ordination across the Victorian Public Service
A member of the La Trobe Library staff has been nominated to the special committee convened by the Director, Aboriginal Affairs Victoria on the implementation of the Aboriginal employment strategy. An important component of this strategy is the provision of cross-cultural training and Aboriginal Affairs Victoria aims to improve the co-ordination of Aboriginal cross-cultural training across the Victorian Public Service. The aim of the committee is to identify core service wide Aboriginal cross-cultural issues that will form a basic component of future cross-cultural programmes. It is hoped that these core components will then be adopted by agencies with specialist Aboriginal programme delivery requirements.
