National survey of the overall state of national bibliographic access (including indexing and listing in directories) (Pictorial format) (Resolution TC1/RC3)

Project Officer: Julia Trainor, National Library of Australia
Consultant: Paul Hodgson, Informed Sources

That a national survey on the overall state of national bibliographic access (including listing and indexing in directories) be carried out to facilitate as needed the development of action plans, and a report on the findings be compiled. In particular, the survey should identify, with regard to all formats and certain categories of material which represent problems of bibliographic access ( eg. non-English language):

  • gaps and duplication in national bibliographic coverage
  • the extent of availability of bibliographic data
  • significant manual files of data
  • the degree of adherence to common standards

The final version of Paul Hodgson's report on the national survey of bibliographic access to documentary pictorial collections has been printed. The availability of the report has been advertised in Gateways, ACLIS News, and appropriate Internet lists.

Publication of an Aboriginal thesaurus

Project Officer Alex Byrne, Chief Librarian, Northern Territory University

The Aboriginal thesaurus has been developed as one aspect of a cooperative project involving the Northern Territory University, University of South Australia and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies with financial support from the three organisations and the Australian Research Council. In this current phase the thesaurus will be brought to a state in which it will be ready for implementation. A pilot implementation with a selected set of books in Northern Territory University other libraries will be pursued to ensure that the thesaurus can be used effectively. Consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers will ensure that the terminology is broadly acceptable.

The Working Group has approved funding for the publication of the thesaurus in both printed and disc forms, packaged together. The thesaurus will be distributed widely to libraries, archives, information services and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations.
