Section C: Report from the Working Group on High Priority Cross Sectoral Projects
Introduction
The Towards Federation 2001 process has been successful in acting as a catalyst for many initiatives that would either not have taken place, or happened more slowly. This final progress report on Resolutions passed at the Towards Federation 2001: Linking Australians and their Heritage Review Meeting, held in December 1993 indicates a range of achievements by all organisations. The success of the process has been in no small measure due to the support of all organisations involved.
This report also includes the final report for the Working Group on High Priority Cross Sectoral Projects. The Working Group has been the mechanism for carrying forward TF2001 objectives over the past three years. The Working Group will continue oversight of present projects through to their completion, expected by the end of 1996. The Preservation of Digital Information (PADI) Working Party will also continue its work.
The National Library has now decided to wind down the Towards Federation 2001 Process which commenced with the Towards Federation 2001 Conference in March 1992. Given the excellent progress to date as recorded in the following report, and the tighter budget situation now facing the Library, it feels that it is no longer appropriate to continue the process in its present form, nor to undertake a formal review process as recommended at the 1993 Review Meeting.
The completion of the TF2001 process in no way lessens the commitment of the National Library to improving access to Australian heritage materials. The Library will continue with this objective, taking account of the many changes that have taken place since 1992, and the need to address the challenges of long-term access to material in both print and electronic formats.
