Review Meeting 1993
Progress Reports 1994-1996
Section A - E: Physical Access Issues
RE1 That ACLIS determine the need for an ongoing means of
guidance to Australian libraries on document supply systems and
access to network services; and if appropriate, ensure the establishment
of effective procedures for such guidance.
- AUGUST 1994
-
ACLIS Coordination Committee is considering updating a document
produced in 1992 by John Wright and Enid Roberts. They are also
awaiting a report from Barry McIntyre at Royal Melbourne Institute
of Technology. A decision is likely to be made at the August 1994
meeting.
- JUNE 1995
-
ACLIS convened a national Interlending and Document Delivery Summit
in Canberra on 18 & 19 May 1995. This is has produced an agenda
for future action in relation to Interlending and Document Delivery
issues in Australia, to be overseen by ACLIS.
- JUNE 1996
-
The proceedings of the National Interlending and Document Delivery
Summit 1995 were published in March 1996. A meeting of key players
is under consideration by ACLIS.
RE2 That the National Library develop a cooperative plan
with those organisations interested in the provision of directory
information related to collections and their conditions of access,
to ensure that this information is nationally available.
- 1994 - 1996
Directory information is being considered carefully in the design
of, and services to be offered from, World 1. Meanwhile, the Australian
Interlibrary Resource Sharing Directory continues to provide directory
data related to interlending access services. This directory was
made available online, through Ozline, in mid 1996.
The National Library of Australia has established links to Australian
libraries at http://www.nla.gov.au/libraries/.
RE3 That Standards Australia Committee IT/19 develop and
publicise suitable Australian standards for document requesting
and document transmission.
- AUGUST 1994
-
Standards Committee IT/19 is taking action to publish the following
two standards by mid-1994:
- AS4196 Information and documentation - Open System Interconnection
- Interlibrary loan application service definition
- AS4197.1 Information and documentation - Open Systems Interconnection
- Interlibrary loan application protocol specification Part 1:
Protocol specification.
-
JUNE 1995
-
Standards Committee IT19 has adopted an interim Australia/New
Zealand standard based on ANSI Z39.50 - 1992 (version 2) Information
Retrieval Application Service Definition and Protocol Specification
for Open Systems Interconnection. The Committee is currently looking
at a range of standards relevant to document transmission. A list
of Australian and Overseas Standards for Libraries was published
by Standards Australia in September 1994.
- JUNE 1996
-
Standards Committee IT/19 considered developing an Australian/
New Zealand standards for electronic manuscript preparation and
markup. This has been delayed following doubts about the suitability
of international standard 12083, and it will be discussed further
in the meetings of July and November 1996.
RE4 That the National Library of Australia encourage the
Library and Information Services of Western Australia to complete
its development of a qualitative survey model for use in assessing
client needs for access to Australia's documentary heritage; and
when it is complete, Council of Australian State Libraries, the
Council of Federal, State and Territory Archives and the National
Library of Australia determine whether further development is
necessary and support the use of the model in conducting surveys
of client needs.
- AUGUST 1994
-
The Library and Information Service of Western Australia are continuing
with the development of a qualitative survey model for assessing
client needs for access to Australia's documentary heritage.
- JUNE 1996
-
The draft survey form was completed and a pilot survey conducted
in December 1995-January 1996. The results have been analysed
and a new survey tool will be developed, based on feedback from
the first model. When this is completed the draft will be circulated
to CASL members for comment.
RE5 That ACLIS, the National Preservation Office, the National
Film and Sound Archive and the Australian Archives establish a
joint working party to recommend an effective strategy for dealing
with the issue of continued access to materials in formats for
which the access technology has become obsolete.
- AUGUST 1994
The National Film and Sound Archive have accepted carriage of
this resolution. The Working Party is expected to meet in mid-1994
JUNE 1995
The Preservation Branch of the National Film and Sound Archive
plans to address the issue in August/September 1995, when a working
party will be established and issue papers circulated for comment
to relevant institutions.
JUNE 1996
The National Film and Sound Archive reports that the need to address
obsolete technology is intricately tied up with transfers and
digital preservation issues. As such the outcomes from this group
will be met by the RG5 (now called Preservation of Australian
Digital Information (PADI) Working Group) outcomes.
PADI now has a Web Page (http://www.nla.gov.au/padi/)
which will soon have the aims and goals made public. The issues
of obsolete technology will be specifically picked up by the PADI
Technology and Standards subcommittee.
