National Library marks Dame Nellie Melba's 150th
26 May 2011
What: 150th birthday of Dame Nellie Melba
Where: National Library of Australia
When: Thursday 19 May
Time: 10am – 11am
The National Library of Australia has one of the largest collections of Dame Nellie Melba memorabilia in the world and to mark what would have been the 150th birthday of our favourite soprano and queen of farewell tours, we will have some of these treasures out on show for the media.
The Library’s Curator of Music, Robyn Holmes, will also be available for interview about the life and times of Dame Nellie – the woman whose voice was described as ‘ravishing’.
Melba reigned as the supreme diva at Covent Garden in London from 1889-1926 and was one of the first international stars captured on the new recording techniques of the day.
High-res images of Dame Nellie from the National Library’s collection are available at http://www.nla.gov.au/media/melba/
