Principles
The recording of these oral histories is crucial to documenting a
significant period of Australian history. To ensure the objectives of the
project are met and interviewees are clear about their involvement, the
following principles have been developed to guide the project:
- although the National Library is unable to provide professional
counselling services to individuals being interviewed, it will ensure that
information about available services is provided to interviewees;
- the National Library is committed to promoting and providing
access to its collections and interviewees will therefore be asked to authorise
public access to their interview for research purposes;
- individuals may choose to record their interviews in the
language of their choice;
- every effort will be made to ensure that culturally appropriate
individuals are commissioned to undertake interviews;
- individuals who have been interviewed will receive a cassette
copy of their interview and a transcript;
- interviews will be recorded with equipment designed to produce
high quality sound recordings;
- individuals being interviewed may be invited to be
photographed; and
- the selection of individuals to be recorded will be based on
the experiences of Indigenous people and others such as administrators,
missionaries, hospital workers, and police.
