The National Apology Three Years Later

Gay McAuley

Abstract: This article examines the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, issued by the former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on 13 February 2008, and the landmark Welcome to Country ceremony that opened the 42nd Parliament the day before. The original discussion of this event, written immediately after the Apology, is reframed with a preface and postface, providing sobering reflections on the social and political implications of the apology three years on. The author argues that the euphoria and hope that accompanied the apology have been tempered by disappointment, as the promise of February 2008 has not translated into significant changes in the lives of Aboriginal Australians.
