Traditional Australian Circus: Change and Survival

Abstract


Since the early 1990s three of Australia’s largest, longest-surviving and most popular family circuses have closed. Rapid social change in Australia is threatening the survival of traditional circus culture, with its deep historical roots. This article outlines the history of traditional circus in Australia, and examines cultural and social changes that threaten this nomadic culture.
