Q Liang, X.H Wang, B.G. Lees

Abstract

Managing the conflicts over marine protected areas and the local community has beenidentified as a major challenge to the management of these areas in China. Community participation is prescribed to improve the relationships with the local community in the management of these marine protected areas. This article outlines the progress of community participation in the management of marine protected areas in China through a case study of the Shankou Mangrove Marine Nature Reserve. Lessons from the practice in China suggest that legislation; suitable methods; communication; and economic compensation to local communities are important for the success of community participation.
