Provision of Australian Government Information on the Internet

Kerry Webb

Abstract

Australian government organisations (at all levels) have reacted slowly to the opportunities presented by the Internet, but are starting to show that they have some idea of where they should be going. They are using the Net for a variety of purposes in furthering the aims of their organisations, including its capabilities as a medium for discussion forums. The paper discusses the reasons why government agencies have done what they have and suggests how this will change in the future.

A number of Commonwealth initiatives arising from recent reviews will set the scene for further developments, aided by the work of interdepartmental working parties directed at providing better communications information infrastructure to all Australian communities.

Finally, the paper outlines the probable future directions of the provision of government information and services on the Internet, taking into account the impact of Internet service providers and other online services such as Compuserve and On Australia.
