Archiving the Web: the National Collection of Australian Online Publications

Margaret Phillips

Abstract

Recognising online publications as an intrinsic part of the national documentary heritage, the National Library of Australia, together with a number of partners, is building the National Collection of Australian Online Publications. The purpose of the National Collection is to ensure that Australians of the future will be able to access today’s significant Australian online information resources.

This paper describes what we are doing, why we are doing it, and how. It also discusses the lessons we have learned, and aspects of web archiving that we have still to address adequately.

I do not need to tell this audience about the challenges to libraries in collecting, storing and conserving the digital materials for which they are responsible. You know these challenges, are facing them, and that’s why we are all here today, to learn from each other. So I shall go straight on to the situation in Australia and how we have addressed them.
