2004 Information Format Trends : Content, Not Containers
OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) (Date Created: 2004)
This is a follow up document to the 2003 Five Year Information Format Trends report. It is an enlightening report regarding the concept of "format agnostic" users of library and web based material. It explores the idea that users don't care about what type of document (book, URL, file, text etc) the information is, rather the content is of greater significance. Projected shifts in the volume of content are also discussed. Of particular interest is the rise of social publishing such as blogs and wikis and the syndication of digital content. Such shifts have implications for the planning and implimentation of digital preservation strategies.

Historical The Archive as an Ecosystem
Coleman, David; Martin, Julia In: JEP - The Journal of Electronic Publishing (Date Created: Apr 2002)
This article introduces a new metaphor for the processes in managing the preservation of digital archives, that of the ecosystem, and likens the survival of data against technological change to the processes of evolutionary adaptation - "an ongoing process of selection -- of media platforms, of preservation structures, of migratory patterns " to avoid "data extinction".

Developing Digital Preservation Programs: the Cornell Survey of Institutional Readiness, 2003-2005
Buckley, Ellie; Kenney, Anne R. In: RLG DigiNews (Date Created: 15 Aug 2005)
This article discusses the results of a survey conducted from 2003 to 2005. The results are also compared to those of a previous RLG (Research Libraries Group) survey conducted in 1998. The survey covered areas such as the availability of digital preservation policies, types of file storage media used, storage practices, actions taken to preserve the life of digital content, depository arrangements and funding. The latest survey results shows an increasing awareness of digital preservation issues and a correlation between the acquisition of digital content and digital preservation practices. Another observation was that there was a shift in emphasis from technology to organisational concerns when looking at safeguarding digital materials.

This memorandum is based on the work and experience of the nestor project partners, on contributions from scientists, a survey of German archives, libraries and museums and the ideas put forward during a public discussion in the Bundesarchiv Koblenz in February 2006. The memorandum lays down 18 basic principles for a German long-term preservation policy, and is divided into the areas of 'Responsibility for the long-term preservation of digital information', 'Selection, availability and access', 'Technical measures' and 'Networking and training'. The nestor partners are aiming to raise awareness of the necessity of investing in the long-term accessibility of digital resources.

Historical Moving Frontier : Archiving, Preservation and Tomorrow's Digital Heritage
Berthon, Hilary; Webb, Colin (Date Created: Feb 2000) (Australia)
This paper reviews international progress in digital archiving and preservation over the past one to two years. There have been developments in international collaboration, many archiving models are being tested, active work on a range of facilitating issues, and an ongoing debate over the most appropriate preservation strategies. A growing trend noted is the ongoing commitment of sharing information, for example, the redevelopment of the PADI website.

Historical Preservation in the Digital World
Paul Conway (Date Created: 1 Mar 1996) (United Kingdom)
This paper includes a framework for preservation planning and management from two perspectives: (1) contexts for action and (2) priorities for action, pointing out similarities and differences between present practice and future needs. It suggests that many of the basic tenets of preservation management can be applied in a highly technological environment, but that some long-held principles may no longer apply.
