THIS PAGE IS UNDER DEVELOPMENT.
The purpose of this topic page is to list, describe and evaluate open source digital preservation tools. This information can be used to decide if the particular resource would be of benefit to your requirements. Some of the resources listed here are in developmental stages so practical evaluations are not possible. All resources are open source unless otherwise stated.
This page is not intended to be an extensive listing, but a guide to what is available. To gain access to the most extensive range of information on these resources, this page should be used in conjunction with the DCC digital curation tools page.
The DCC digital curation tools page is an extensive annotated list of curation tools which is being continuously updated. The list includes existing non-commercial tools and technologies, which could be implemented by creators, curators and re-users of digital information. The list is not limited to technical tools, but also incorporates any relevant technical manuals, methodologies and papers.
Please note that the opinions stated in the evaluations on this page are not necessarily those of the National Library of Australia.
If you have any suggestions for additional tools or any feedback on the use of the tools listed, please contact padi@nla.gov.au

- AONS - An Obsolescence Detection and Notification Service for Web Archives and Digital Repositories
Berriman, D.; Curtis, J.; Hunter, J.; Koerbin, Paul; Rafton, P.
(Date Created: Jan 2007)
(Australia)
- This paper describes the results of a collaboration between the University of Queensland, the Australian National University and the National Library of Australia which has developed and deployed an automatic obsolescence detection and notification service (AONS) for digital collections. AONS can be configured to automatically monitor collections for format obsolescence and streamline the subsequent migration of 'at risk' digital objects to current recommended formats, enabling their long-term preservation and accessibility. It can be run over digital objects in institutional repositories or web archives. It builds on the work of the PANIC project (Preservation and Archival of New media and Interactive Collections).

- Embedding Legacy Environments into A Grid-Based Preservation Infrastructure
Hemmje, Matthias; Klas, Claus-Peter; Muller, Lars
(Date Created: 30 Sep 2008)
- This paper given at iPRES 2008 (British Library Conference Center 29-30 Sept. 2008) describes the main objectives and challenges of the SHAMAN (Sustaining Heritage Access through Multivalent ArchiviNg) Project. It focuses on Sub Project 1 (ISP1) which trials and validates the SHAMAN approach for memory institutions, scientific publishing, libraries and parliamentary archives. Recognising that these institutions will want to keep their heterogeneous storage and distributed management systems while participating in a distributed preservation environment, the SHAMAN project has devised a conceptual approach based
on a grid-based integration layer and service-oriented architectures for resolving the issues. The paper looks at the integration requirements, examples of existing repository infrastructures, the design of the SHAMAN service oriented architectural framework and the use of the DAFFODIL access support system for the data grid.

Gap Analysis: A Survey of PA Tool Provision
Houtman, Frank; van Bussel, Sara
(Date Created: 12 Oct 2009)
- This report (26 p.) prepared for the Planets project discusses the findings of a survey of file formats archived by cultural and scientific organisations; case studies of three specialised formats (DAISY, FITS, and sheet music formats); and considerations for determining gaps in the availability of preservation action (PA) tools. The report recommends that gap analysis needs to be undertaken every 2-3 years. It notes that individual organisations may have differing perceptions on whether a gap exits, based on their individual circumstances. Appendixes include: List of found file formats; and, List of migration tools.

From TIFF to JPEG 2000? Preservation Planning at the Bavarian State Library Using a Collection of Digitized 16th Century Printings
Beinert, Tobias; Brantl, Markus; Kugler, Anna; Kulovits, Hannes; Rauber, Andreas; Schoger, Astrid
In: D-Lib magazine
(Date Created: Nov 2009)
(Germany)
- This article describes the use of PLATO, the preservation planning tool developed by the PLANETS project, in assessing the suitability of migration of images in TIFF format to JPEG 2000 by the Bavarian State Library. After examining the proposal and taking into consideration the Library's specific preservation requirements and policies and results of experiments with available migration tools, it was decided not to undertake the proposed migration at this point in time. Using PLATO assisted in the identification and documentation of the factors which contributed to the decision making process. The article emphasises the need for individual organisations to make preservation decisions based on their individual situation.

- Towards a Curation and Preservation Architecture for CAD Engineering Models
Ball, Alexander; Ding, Lian; Patel, Manjula
(Date Created: 29 Sep 2008)
- This paper given at iPRES 2008 (British Library Conference Centre, 29-30 Sept. 2008) discusses preservation requirements of CAD models and presents two proof of concept tools developed to aid in their curation and preservation. RRoRIfe - Registry/Repository of Representation Information for Engineering - uses Representation Information, as defined by the OAIS Reference Model to advise on suitable migration strategies for migrating CAD models to archival or exchange formats. It is a simple preservation planning tool incorporating a registry of format characteristics and a registry of migration software. The second tool LiMMA -Lightweight Models with Multilayered Annotations - is an architecture for layering non-geometric information on top of a geometric model. It is a series of individual tools based around a common XML schema and workflow.

LOCKSS
Stanford University Libraries
(Regularly Updated)
(United States of America)
- Stanford Libraries is building "persistent access" software for libraries. The project is called: LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe) and provides tools which use local, library controlled computers to safeguard readers' long-term access to web based journals. The system ensures that hyperlinks to material it is safeguarding continue to resolve and deliver the appropriate content to their readers even if in the Internet at large the links no longer resolve and the content is no longer available.
