- Digitisation Strategy 2008-2011
- For the past two decades, the British Library has undertaken a number of focused digitisation initiatives. More recently, we have entered the world of mass digitisation in partnership with external funding bodies and technology providers. Through digitisation, we are creating a valuable and enduring resource for scholars and the public alike. Our digitisation strategy underpins the Library’s corporate strategy to 2011, including our content strategy and digital library programme and these will inform our thinking as we develop our strategy to 2020. This paper sets out our vision for the next 10 years and how we will achieve this.

- Digital Library Programme
- The British Library’s strategic vision is to “provide both physical and digital access to world-class information where and when people need it". These pages describe the Library's strategy for creating a critical mass of digital content by both collecting new published works in digital form and through the digitisation of the physical collections.

- British Library Application Profile (BLAP)
- This document lists all the elements and element refinements (terms) that can be used when creating metadata according to the BL Application Profile. There are two proposed uses for this application profile at the British Library - the first is to provide a metadata standard for use in digitisation projects where MARC records are not going to be created, the second is as a format that encompasses enough of the common elements from other BL databases to allow conversions that will enable high level cross-searching.

- IMPACT - IMProving ACcess to Text
- IMPACT is a project funded by the European Commission. It aims to significantly improve access to historical text and to take away the barriers that stand in the way of the mass digitisation of the European cultural heritage. The British Library is one of the 15 partners working across 11 countries.
The IMPACT project will develop improved OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technologies in order to overcome the inadequacies of current techniques in dealing with historic materials.

- IMPACT - Improving access to text
- In its i2010 vision for the European Digital Library, the EU has formulated the ambitious plan of digitizing the entire printed European heritage. Current OCR techniques can only be deployed to a limited extent on valuable historical material. The recognition of old typefaces, older spelling variations or complex layouts in newspapers is producing unsatisfactory results at present.
The aim of the IMPACT project is to overcome obstacles to setting up the European Digital Library. The project unites 15 national and regional libraries, research institutes and companies - all competence centers with a great deal of experience in mass digitization. The project involves the development of new software applications for improved OCR, and making these available together with related information via an open source Internet platform, thereby creating the basis for a range of mass digitization programs.

- Databank of Digital Daily newspapers
- The Koninklijke Bibliotheek initiated the Databank of Digital Daily newspapers project at the end of 2006. The project will realize the large-scale digitization of Dutch national, regional, local and colonial newspapers and make these freely accessible on the Internet. The Databank of Digital Daily newspapers will contain eight million pages, from the first newspaper dated 1618 to the newspapers of the twentieth century.
The project involves the selection, digitization, search-and-retrieval and online presentation of the newspapers. A web service will be set up with advanced search options for researchers and the general public.

- Dutch Parliamentary Papers
- The National Library of the Netherlands together with the library of the House of Representatives started a project at the end of 2003 to film and digitise the Dutch parliamentary papers from the period 1814-1995. The collection contains all the records and supplements of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Dutch parliamentary papers are one off the most important collections for the research of the history of the parliament and of the history of the Netherlands in general. Historians, journalists, lawyers, politicians and researchers all use the parliamentary papers frequently.
The collection contains about 2,5 million pages.

- Guidelines Preservation Imaging Metamorfoze (DRAFT VERSION)
- Metamorfoze is the Netherlands' national programme for the preservation of paper heritage. The programme started in 1997. The Metamorfoze programme is a collaborative effort of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National Library of the Netherlands) and the Nationaal Archief (National Archives of the Netherlands).
In June 2007 a draft version of the Guidelines Preservation Imaging Metamorfoze was published. The Guidelines set out the requirements for preservation images commissioned for Metamorfoze.
This draft version of the Guidelines is specifically intended to serve as the basis for pilot and test projects to be initiated as of June 2007. All criteria, technical targets and software may be slightly adjusted or changed. Besides serving as a basis for pilot and test projects, this draft version is also intended as a starting point for discussion with national and international experts in the field of image science.
The final 1.0 version of the Preservation Imaging Guidelines is expected to be available in 2009.
That final version should be regarded as setting the standard for preservation imaging. This means that all Metamorfoze preservation imaging projects must comply fully with these Guidelines. The images produced in this context must adhere to quality standards and retain a verifiable relation to the original in such a way that they can serve as a replacement of the original object, as the originals are withdrawn from use after preservation. However, there will be different requirements for different types of material.

- Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives
- The Library of Congress has received a Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation via the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) to support a project that will catalog 125,000 sheet maps of Africa. The catalog records to be produced will include geographic coordinates for each map that will permit geographic searching of the catalog records and resources. The enhanced catalog data will make it possible to view the coverage area of individual sheet maps using geographical browsers such as Google Earth. Work on the project will be completed in 2012.

- Performing Arts Encyclopedia (PAE)
- The Performing Arts Encyclopedia (PAE) at the Library of Congress serves as a laboratory to investigate the use of standards such as METS, MODS, and PREMIS with a variety of resource types. PAE is a digital library of performing arts resources at the Library of Congress, including scores, sheet music, audio recordings, films, photographs, and articles and biographical essays. METS is used to wrap the descriptive metadata, which is encoded using MODS, along with any technical or structural metadata required to manage the digital objects. The diversity of the types of information in PAE provides a platform for developing strategies and adapting standards to provide unified access to the material. Ongoing work will be to enable the extraction of internal MIX and PREMIS information to be formatted according to those standards and added to the METS package in export situations.

- Scanning for Access Project
- The Library of Congress has a mass-digitization effort focusing on general collection materials that are endangered and for which open access can subsequently be provided. Funded by the Sloan Foundation, it relies on coordination among a number of Library Services divisions, the Internet Archive, and other Open Content Alliance institutions. The project has achieved sustained throughput levels of one thousand books each week. Besides the digitized material, the goal of the project is to identify weaknesses in the current workflows, to correct the inaccuracies in metadata creation, and to develop automated tools to ensure improved quality in digitization. A full-feature open source page turner is being developed as part of the project.

- National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP)
- The goal of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), a partnership between the Library of Congress (LC) and the United States National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), is to provide enhanced access to United States newspapers. Over a period of approximately 20 years, NDNP will create a national, digital resource of historically significant newspapers from all the states and U.S. territories, published between 1836 and 1922. This searchable database will be permanently maintained at the Library of Congress and be freely accessible via the Internet. As part of the project, standards such as METS, MARC, MODS and PREMIS have been used to enable the efficient creation of union access to these resources. A prototype of this digital resource was launched in March 2007, "Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers, and a new release will be coming out in 2009.
Partners: National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH); contributing institutions.

- Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program
- The National Library of Australia is collaborating with state and territory libraries in a program to digitise out of copyright newspapers. In July 2008 the Australian Newspapers Beta service was launched to the public and is continuing to be developed. This is a free online service that enables full-text searching of newspaper articles. Users can contribute by tagging articles, adding comments and correcting OCR'ed text.
