Managing Electronic Publications at the British Library

Plans are underway for The British Library, with the help of IBM, to provide long-term access to digital collections using a new Digital Library System (DLS).

The DLS will be designed according to the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model and will enable:

  • new electronic materials to be added to the digital store, including new formats as they come onstream;
  • appropriate metadata for preservation and resource discovery to be constructed and stored. This will include the automatic construction of metadata from the object itself as well as the manual construction of metadata;
  • exchange of metadata with other Library ICT systems for management information and budgetary purposes.

It will provide:

  • a secure IT environment for the Library's digital collection items;
  • functions that will enable the migration or emulation of objects in the store in order to preserve access in the long-term;
  • a browser-based user interface in the Library's Reading Rooms to identify and then view digital objects in the store. This will be available to users from 2002.
