Metadata Enrichment for Digital Preservation

Metadata for Digital Libraries: State of the Art and Future Directions

This JISC TechWatch report (19 p.) considers the need for standardisation and integration within the Library community and the importance of metadata to simplify user access. This report argues that existing standards based on XML (including METS) should be used to produce a coherent integrated metadata strategy for digital libraries.

Comparative Study of e-journal Archiving Solutions : A JISC Funded Investigation

This report results from a call by the JISC in January 2008 for a Comparative Study of e-Journal Archiving Solutions. It is intended for wide use by institutions to "inform policies and investment in e-journal archiving solutions.” and to “ inform negotiations undertaken by JISC Collections and NESLi2 when seeking publishers’ compliance to deposit content with at least one e-journal archiving solution.”

The report "contains chapters covering Approaches to e-journal preservation, Publisher licensing and legal deposit, Comparisons of Six Current e-Journal Archiving Programmes (LOCKSS, CLOCKSS, Portico, the KB e-depot, OCLC's Electronic Collections Online, and the British Library's e-journal Digital Archive), Practical experience of e-journal archiving solutions, Evaluation of four common scenarios/trigger events, and Criteria for judging relevance and value of new archiving initiatives. There are two appendices on Publisher Participation in different programmes."

Statement on the Development and Establishment of Voluntary Deposit Schemes for Electronic Publications

Projects and Case Studies

Model Technological and Social Architecture for the Preservation of State Government Digital Information

Two year project led by the Minnesota State Archives and funded under NDIIPP to preserve state government digital information. The project will work with selected state legislatures in exploring methods to provide enhanced online access to legislative materials in digital form.

Digital Preservation of E-Journals in 2008: Urgent Action Required Revisited

This report summarises results of a survey conducted in January 2008 by Portico and Ithaka of library directors at four-year colleges and universities in the United States. The survey examined the community’s current perspectives on the digital preservation of e-journals. It was designed to analyze attitudes and preservation priorities that can be used to guide Portico in fulfilling its role as a not-for-profit archive of digital scholarly resources; and secondly to provide concrete data that could assist library directors, funders, and administrators in the allocation of limited resources.

State-by-state Report on Authentication of Online Legal Resources

This comprehensive report examined the results of a state survey in 2006-2007 that investigated whether U.S. government-hosted legal resources on the Web are official and capable of being considered authentic. The report includes 6 key findings related to authenticity and permanence of public access. The report followed on from the AALL's 2003 Report on Permanent Public Access to Electronic Government Information.
