APOLLO Videodisk 1992:
Australian Pictures Online, with a Library Orientation

Introduction to the Videodisc

The APOLLO VIDEODISC 1992 is the first, experimental videodisc produced by the National Library of Australia. It reproduces a sample of the Pictorial Collection.

Only 12,000 out of the Library's total collection of over 500,000 original artworks, prints and photographs are included on the disk. As a result, not every artist/photographer in the collection is represented on the disk, and not every work by an artist/photographer represented is on the disk. Approximately 6,000 original works and 6,000 photographs have been reproduced.

The original artworks are predominantly Australian and nineteenth century and include portraits, ships, landscapes, historic events, flora and fauna. Artists include Tom Roberts, Conrad Martens, S.T.Gill, William Westall and Ellis Rowan

In the case of sketchbooks or albums of originals, or sets of prints, not all individual items are included. Researchers should check with the Pictorial Section regarding the Library's holdings.

An effort has been made to select for reproduction on the disk only those items which are out of copyright, or which the Library has the right to copy. Where copyright status is uncertain or copyright holders unknown, works have sometimes been included. If a work in copyright has been inadvertently included and the copyright-holder prefers that the work not be available on the videodisc the record will be removed.

The Library holds multiple copies of some of its rare prints, most of which have been separately accessioned. Generally, only one copy of a print has been reproduced on the videodisc but the indexing gives the accession numbers of the various copies.

Some photographic collections have not been indexed individually. Access is through the title i.e. the name of the collection ,the photographer, the accession number or a broad subject heading, usually the geographic subject e.g. Mandurama.

The photographic collections on the videodisc are as follows:
