A Rickshaw & some coolie carriers.
PIC 3409/591 Hongkong Harbour. H.K 13-1-19 This [railway] Block contains the Hong Kong & K Edward Hotels. The G.P.O. & many large Shipping offices & the tram service bisects it left to right. The Kowloon harbour had big ship yards always busy. I’ve been over the lot.

PIC 3409/596 Hongkong Harbour. H.K 13-1-19. Evidently a quiet day’s shipping. The white boat roofed, is a Houseboat (the ‘Tamar’) & naval offices. On Shore behind the big Building opposite the Tamar is the H.R. Club’s Cricket ground. Dockyard towards Right. Kowloon in middle distance left-hand side of photo & china hills in distance.

PIC 3409/600 Escolta, Manila. Manila, P.I. Jany. 4th. 1919. The main street and where most of the business houses are located, though quite a big commerce is carried on inside the walled-city. Somewhere in this street I bought these cards. Native police control the traffic. Singe file is only possible. The footpaths sometimes too narrow for two to pass. Some fine shops and each sign has English and Spanish indications, some have a third lingo of mixed Spanish and Chinese. Electric Car service good costing 12 centavos. Filipina men and women shop assistants, some women very pretty, all quaintly dressed.
PIC 3409/601 Parian Gate, Manila, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. A gate of the ancient Spanish Walled City and still existent. All natives had to leave the walled city at 9.pm. and any caught therein after that time severely dealt with. This a feature of modern Manila and right in the City. The old Moat now filled in and a golf links laid out. The American Govt. provided a tutor free for golfers. Even though it was raining golfers played. Links just left side of Manila Hotel and ideal grounds. Trams run partially round the links and close to the Old Well.
PIC 3409/602 River Scene, Philippines. Manila, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. A native boat with cargo in the front part and the "Kids" and "Dad" living peacefully in the rear. I suppose it is like most others the "Squaw" should be doing the work of the A.W.U. if at a berth, or else performing the duties of Chief Engineer and a boat load of Navigators. The awnings of the boats are principally of Ratan Cane plaited and woven but some of some kind of grass, all more of less waterproof.
PIC 3409/603 Manila, P.I. Jany 4th 19. This is a specimen of the native cattle and corresponds with the ones I mentioned as having seen on the streets at San-Dakan. The natives of both countries use these animals to draw two wheeled carts and guide the animals with one rein passing through a ring in the nose of the beast and back to the driver the rope resting between the horns. They are emblematic of the lazy islanders and seldom exceed a walk.
PIC 3409/604 Pagsanjan Gorge – Philippines. Manila Jany 4th 1919. The original of this scene must be very beautiful. The gorge is a fair distance inland – too far to visit during our stay.
PIC 3409/605 Rice Planting in P.I. The use of the Typewriter graciously loaned me by Mr. Campbell, Chief Steward of our vessel S.S. Taiyuan, and cards written whilst the boat is rolling considerable in the China Sea. H.J.A. manila, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. Natives planing rice and women doing the work. The men do not do much of the heavier work out here and he is seen supervising. The planters stand almost knee deep in water meanwhile. Rice and fish I believe form the staple food.
PIC 3409/606 Filipina Woman. Manila, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. Note the peculiar custom of wearing the blouse. This photo is not very good. It should show the blouse open at the front and dropping well away at the neck and back leaving the neck and shoulders of the duskie maids quite apparent. A transparent cloth made of Pineapple fibre and varying design and colored, with big balloon-like sleeves built unknown to Parisian Mode in a type peculiar to the Philippines serves them for a blouse. A kind of train to the dress is looped back, show petticoat.
PIC 3409/607 Casa de Espana, Manila, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. One of the Government buildings and containing the Bureau of Science. Owing to the short time we were in port it was not possible for me to visit some of these buildings.
PIC 3409/608 Pagsanjan River, Philippines. Jany 4th 1919. Showing some of the finer scenery in the Island. Pronounce the name as Pag-sanhan. A raft of coconuts, an outrigged canoe, and the stern of one of the river boats are to be seen on the water. There were many m ore views of this river but this was one of the more spectacular during a hurried search through those offering.
PIC 3409/609 Binondo Canal, Manila. Jany 4th 1919. One of the main Canals of the City and parallel to the Escolts. Many of the principal warehouses are along its banks and the barges are poled alongside and discharged. The bridge in the distance is a draw bridge and lifts upright and permits the passage of these bancas to places beyond.
PIC 3409/610 Old Spanish Fort, Cavite, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. Name pronounced Ca-vee-tee. When I was living in Tambo, Q. I had the Stamp Collectors craze real bad and sent some Stamps to the Post-Master, Manila who handed them to the chief of Police here.
PIC 3409/611 Girls Dormitory – Manila. Jany 4th 1919. This is a sort of Y.W.C.A. for girls, so I am told but time disallowed a visit. Note the windows of the buildings, this one included. Little squares appear as it were in a lead frame. These squares are not glass light but are of shell and allow only a subdued light through them so as to minimise the glare which I noticed is very distressing to the eyes from various directions.
PIC 3409/612 Episcopal Church, Manila, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. One of the many Churches of the City. Somewhat unusual architecture.
PIC 3409/613 Mt Mayon – Bat Phil. Scouts, Albay, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. The Americans train the Islanders in the way they should go. The mountain could be seen from the shore where we were lying. These men are drafted later on into the guard on the streets under supervision by the American troops.
PIC 3409/614 Malabon bancas, Philippines. Jany 4th 1919. Somewhere close to the City but no one on board can tell me the exact place nor the building’s name.
PIC 3409/615 Pasig River, Philippines. Manila P.I Jany 4th 19. One view of the principal river of the Island which has a strong yet navigable current and many mills (timber) and oil mills occupy its banks. One mill was asked to provide ten million ft. per year. A river shallow draft boat. Rafts of Bamboos floating downstream. Note the fine class of residences which are numerous on its banks and elsewhere in suitable localities round the suburbs. In the City I believe the Europeans live close to the Walled City.
PIC 3409/616 Lfugao Women, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. The Filipina women are broad nosed and dark skinned rather pretty when young but only medium to small of statue. Their gait is graceful. The working class carry huge bundles on their heads including eggs. These dont resemble ‘Psych’ very much but must have been close-by the ;Well’. A cross between the Filipina and the Spaniard evolves a straight higher bridged nose which makes a strikingly beautiful feature even though dusky. Many girls dress English style.
PIC 3409/617 Pagsanjan River, Philippines. Manila, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. The beauty of the natural foliage of the Philippines is everywhere apparent. These Photographs are particularly well taken and no doubt also well chosen spots.
PIC 3409/618 Manila P.I. Jany 4th 1919. Cocoanuts are floated downstream. A cheap & convenient means of transit to the Oil Mills.
PIC 3409/619 Paco cemetery, Manila. Jany 4th 1919. A scene In the old cemetery. Note the doors behind which are the coffins of the departed Filipinas. Those who can afford to pay the yearly rental (varying from 20 Pesos, about £2/2/- use these cells even to the present time. If at any time the payment for rental does not materialize when due, out goes the coffin anywhere, generally on the roadway, but if the rent be paid back into the cell goes Grandpa.
PIC 3409/620 Bird’s eye View of Manila. Jany 4th 1919. We entered the city across the bridge in the foreground from right to left. The Old Spanish Bridge on which the Filipinas live entirely and keep families and also carry cargo by poleing the boats along in the canals one of which runs to the right of the big building at the left end of the bridge. The two spires in the distance are those of the Cathedral. I do not know of any other buildings which I can point out.
PIC 3409/621 Auditorium Camp. John Way, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. As far as I can gather this is probably the remains of old Spanish fortifications, many of which are dotted round the first settled parts.
PIC 3409/622 Philippine General Hospital, Manila, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. Showing about half of this modern building said to be the ‘premier’ building of any similar institute in the "Orient".
PIC 3409/623 Legaspi & Urdaneta Monument, Manila, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. This statue has been erected by the Filipinas in memory of the man who led an unsuccessful uprising against the American rule. Hence he or rather they are more or less immortalised. Whilst this statue stands in the most prominent part of the City on the left hand side of the Luneta and is greatly prized by the Filipinas it is a thorn in the side of the Americans. I’m told the Islanders are seeking release and selfgovernment but all this information is mere heresay.
PIC 3409/624 Manila Hotel. Jany 4th 1919. Situated close to the shore and ¼ mile form No. 5. wharf wereon I set foot in the City. I change ½ sov. at this Hotel and received 4.70, (4 pesos 70 centavos -- about 9/9). It is a magnificent building and has about 250 bedrooms. A telegraph office, barbers saloon, Cook’s Agency, and many other conveniences all under one roof. A dance in the roof garden was progressing when I came aboard at midnight. It is in front o this hotel that the Luneta is laid out.
PIC 3409/625 Elks Club, Manila. Jany 4th 1919. The American Club, situated but a short distance to the left of the Manila Hotel and a street of so further inland. These buildings add much beauty to the view of the City from the incoming vessels. It goes without saying that things in the Elk Club are very much Yankee. The vehicle is a "Garry", a mixture of a Sulky and a Rickshaw and are for hire @ 40 centavos an hour.
PIC 3409/626 P.I. Village. Jany 4th 1919. A village easily accessible from town by Motor Car costing from 3.50 pesos (roughly 7/-) per hour. Note the native thatched houses. Some of the Theatrical party motored out here and said the drive was superb.
PIC 3409/627 Army and Navy Club, Manila. Jany 4th 1919. The Barracks at the Fort of Corregio, 28 miles from Manila, at the entrance of the Bay feeds a large garrison and the Island is termed a second Gibraltar. We passed close to it. As a result the necessity for the "Club" for the Officers when they are not at Dancing Halls doing Fox Trots etc. with the Bellarinas. Quite a gay sight is the Dance Hall, I was at one tonight: all the City goes by Electric Car. This club is quite close to the Elk.
PIC 3409/628 Luneta – Manila, P.I. Jany 4th 1919. As you see, a beautifully laid out garden and drive with a band rotunda where every evening a band plays. This band is the second best band in the World and came second at the Panama Exposition and totally comprises Filipina players and conductor. Filipinas alone seem to make a success of English and American Music, in the Islands. On the extreme left you see the big statue, a photo of which I enclose as it is of considerable Historic importance to the Filipinas. Sunday evenings the drives throng with motor cars.
PIC 3409/629 University of P.I. Jany 4th 1919. The University of the Island and where the Filipinas attend under the tutelage of the Americans. The Filipinas when educated are very clever businessmen but rather indolent.

Owning to the darkness of Temple interiors & the Cramped position & using a single Extension Kodak the results aren’t so bad. The priest was much please with a copy (1/4 plate) which I gave Him. He is striking a wooden Bell to call the Spirits. Offerings of mandarin ornanges: also Incense Burner can be seen. The Tapestry is very Highly coloured – the straw mat is for worshippers to kneel on. During the Big flood which I mentioned from Kanchowfu the water was several feet over the top of the high stone wall which forms the Pier to which the junks & River Launches moor. The Distant shore is also the Right Bank & the City is between it and the Foreground. The junks are going up stream to Kanchowfu. H.J.A. 1.12.1925

On a ramble one Sunday morning I chanced upon this Dirty, Dismal shop & the Lines of the "Rubaiyab" of omar khayyam prompted me to snap the interior. Ere I had taken the snap fully 50 Chinese of Every age, sex & degree of filth had filled the front of the Building & no doubt though the "Foreign Devil" more demented than usual, photographing common clay Pots & "Kongs" etc. I do not care as much for the Enlargement as the 3 ¼ in x 4 ¼ inch negative & print but it can pass. I call this shop "In that old potter’s Shop." H.J.A 1.12.1930
