Australian Bibliographic Network Committee

Terms of reference:

The Committee advises the National Library on a range of matters associated with the Australian Bibliographic Network. The network encompasses all electronic cost recovered services provided by the Library to the Australian library community, and all those services which are closely associated with or provide direct internal support to these cost recovered services.

The Committee:

  • advises the Library on policy development and planning affecting the network and its users;
  • advises the Library on the resourcing of and the setting of charges for the development and use of the network;
  • considers and advises the Library on standards applying to the network;
  • reviews options for the strategic development of the network;
  • reviews and advises the Library on priorities for the functional enhancement of system/communication software and purchase or provision of new services;
  • reviews those operational and procedural aspects of the network on which the Library seeks advice;
  • considers such other matters as may be referred to it from time to time.

Terms of reference:

The function of the Committee is to make recommendations to the Australian Bibliographic Network Committee on cataloguing standards and their implementation. It also has a role in monitoring new national and international standards and their impact on existing network standards.

Terms of reference:

The role of the Advisory Body is to advise the Director-General on the formulation and implementation of a national preservation strategy for documentary heritage materials held in Australian libraries, in particular, and without limiting the generality of the foregoing, to:

  • advise on the operation of the National Preservation Office;
  • advise on methods of ensuring the nationwide coordination of preservation activities;
  • advise on the need for standards covering all aspects of preservation;
  • advise on the provision of adequate training facilities and courses for professional librarians and other staff associated with library preservation;
  • advise on and stimulate research into selected aspects of library preservation;
  • assist in organising conferences, seminars and workshops on library preservation and, in particular, to provide advice on overseas experts;
  • advise on methods of improving liaison between national, state, regional and local authorities and voluntary organisations concerned with library preservation;
  • advise on methods of fostering communication and cooperation with agencies and organisations other than libraries with an interest in heritage preservation;
  • advise on such matters as may be referred to individual members of the Advisory Body by spokespersons of their constituency;
  • advise on international preservation activities including research, bibliographic developments and cooperative projects. In addition, to advise on methods of maximising efforts to communicate with, and to assist countries in the South-East Asia and the Pacific regions.
