Appendix 6: Freedom of Information Statement

In 1996–97 the Library received two formal requests under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 for access to documents. One related to building services and the other to occupational health. A third request for access to internal Library files relating to library education in Papua New Guinea was treated as an FOI request and the fee waived. All three requests were completed within FOI time limits.

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION PROCEDURES AND ACCESS POINTS

Enquiries concerning the procedures for seeking information from the Library under the Freedom of Information Act may be made in writing, by telephone or in person, at the official access point shown below.

In other States, arrangements may be made with the nearest regional office of the Australian Archives (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Townsville, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin or Hobart).

Members of the public may make enquiries on Freedom of Information matters, submit formal requests for access, or inspect documents to which access has been granted at the access points listed above during business hours Monday to Friday.

The Director-General, the Deputy Director-General and the Assistant Director-General, Corporate Services, are the authorised decision makers under the Freedom of Information Act 1982.

CATEGORIES OF DOCUMENTS

Library documents available for public access include policies, catalogues and other indexes associated with the Library’s collections of books and other materials. Documents available for purchase by the public include a wide range of technical and general publications produced by the Library. A range of descriptive brochures on Library services are made available to the public free of charge. Other documents held by the Library include minutes, reports and submissions associated with internal and external committees, general correspondence relating to the activities and functions of the organisation, and administrative documents such as management, staffing, finance and personnel records. Some of the above publications are available electronically on the Library’s Internet home page.
