Version 2.0 November 2001

This statement sets out the policy of the Library towards CD-ROMs and other electronic materials it acquires by deposit.

The National Library of Australia acquires copies of electronic publications produced in Australia as research tools to serve the ongoing needs of the Australian nation and as part of its efforts to maintain and preserve the Australian documentary heritage.

This policy sets out guidelines for the use of CD-ROMs and other electronic materials deposited with the Library.

The Library will:

  1. ensure that copies of CD-ROMs and other machine-readable products, including all discs, accompanying software and documentation are added to the National Library's online catalogue and to the National Bibliographic Database.
  2. ensure the physical security of the products and any accompanying software. Handling will be permitted only by Library staff (including contractors or others under Library management control).
  3. permit the copying of a reasonable portion of the information contained within the item. "Reasonable portion" is as defined in Section 10 (2) of the Copyright Act, 1968.
  4. display notices to users containing appropriate warnings about copyright at point of access.
  5. provide access to users within the Library building only.
  6. ensure that the contents are available only on a standalone machine, not a network and will not lend the material on interlibrary loans.
  7. prohibit the downloading of installation and search or operating software.
  8. store and manage the title under conditions in accordance with the Library's policy on Preserving Australian physical format electronic publications
