Introduction

The National Library’s Collection Development Policy gives the following collecting intentions for anthropology:

The Library will maintain collecting at an introductory level on anthropology, culture and institutions (Conspectus level 1) ensuring that coverage is given to major trends and conceptual developments sufficient to provide a background for studies in Australia and the region. Material about East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific will be collected at an intermediate level (Conspectus level 3).

According to Conspectus, as well as works on the human races and physical anthropology (Dewey 572, 573), this subject division includes culture, customs, costume, etiquette and folklore (Dewey 306, except 306.8, and 391-399). However, the transfer of anthropology from 572 and 573 in Dewey 20 to 301 in Dewey 21, means that an ILMS listing has been problematic. Subject headings have proved more useful than a Dewey range.

Anthropology can be defined as a discipline that deals with the origins, physical and cultural development, racial characteristics and social customs of humankind. The Library’s main interest is in social and cultural anthropology, through its close and often interdisciplinary relationship with the other social sciences. The branch of the discipline strongly based on biological perspectives, focusing on human evolution and non-human primates, is of lesser interest. Coverage of archaeology and linguistics, considered to be major branches of the discipline, are selective. Linguistics will be treated as part of language and literature; archaeology is included in this review.

Identification of core serial titles

Major sources for this review are: Magazines for Libraries, 9th ed., 1997, pp. 126-132; Social Sciences Citation Index Journal Citation Reports, 1997; Tze-chung Li, Social Science Reference Sources: A Practical Guide, 2nd ed., New York: Greenwood, 1990, pp. 187-192 and Josephine Z. Kibbe, Cultural Anthropology: A Guide to Reference and Information Sources, Englewood, Colo.: Libraries Unlimited, 1991, pp. 135-147.

Basic abstracts and indexes

Magazines for Libraries lists three basic sources:

Abstracts in Anthrolopology. ISSN 0001-3455. Baywood, 8 issues p.a. Individual US$330. Faxon US$290. Not held ANL, cancelled ANU 1983; 10 current subs on Kinetica including NSL and VSL.

Anthropological Index. NLA sub ceased 1985. Publication in hard copy ceased 1994. Now Anthropological index online http://lucy.ukc.ac.uk/AIO.html free of charge at present for educational non-commercial purposes (including private study). ANL sub to 1985.

Anthropological Literature. ISSN 0190-3373 Cambridge, MA : Tozzer Library, Harvard University. Also available as Anthropological literature (Online) via RLG Citadel. Not held ANL, held ANU, NU.

Although none of these titles are currently available, the International Bibliography of Social and Cultural Anthropology, published by Unesco, is received on subscription from Blackwells. Abstracting journals tend to be limited in coverage and currency; the other two titles are best dealt with in their online manifestations. General social science indexes also cover anthropology.

Basic periodicals

Magazines for Libraries lists four titles for a general and five titles for an academic library (a consolidated total of seven titles):

American Anthropologist

American Ethnologist. ISSN 0094-0496. Cancelled 1994. Ebsco NS2878/74. S 572.05 AME

American Journal of Physical Anthropology

Annual Review of Anthropology

Current Anthropology

Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute

Reviews in Anthropology

Of these titles only Annual Review of Anthropology (SSCI rank 2) is currently received. American Anthropologist (SSCI rank 7), Current Anthropology (SSCI rank 1) and Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute (SSCI rank 21) are proposed new subscriptions. Li cites the first two as the most prestigious; Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute represents an alternative British and international perspective.

Reviews in Anthropology (Gordon &Breach, US$60), which ANL cancelled in 1981 (S 301.205 REV), is listed by Magazines for Libraries only in its basic general category and consists of "lengthy, in-depth review commentary on recently published books." American Journal of Physical Anthropology, cancelled in 1994 (S573.05 AME; EBSCO NS722/71) is expensive (US$1895 domestic; $2140 other) and covers a specialist branch of anthropology of lesser interest ("human evolution and variations, including primate morphology, physiology, genetics, adaptation, growth, development and behavior, past and present").

Electronic sources

The electronic journal, Journal of World Anthropology (http://wings.buffalo.edu/academic/department/anthropolgy/jwa), is no longer being published and has evolved into the Anthropology Review Database (http://wings.buffalo.edu/ARD). The American Anthropological Association web site provides a good starting point with a list of resources on the Internet at http://www.aaanet.org/resinet.htm. A fuller list of journals can be found at http://home.worldnet.fr/clist/Anthro/Texts/journ.html. Most of these titles are newsletters; sites for major journals usually consist of subscription and contents information, not full text. Titles available in full text through services to which the National Library is likely to have access are as follows:

Social Sciences Abstracts Full Text (152 titles; July 1999)

American Anthropologist (Index 03/1984; Full text 03/1998)

American Ethnologist (Index 11/1982; Full text 02/1998)

Annual Review of Anthropology (Index 01/1994; Full text 01/1995)

Anthropological Quarterly (Index 10/1982; Full text 01/1995)

Anthropological & Education Quarterly (Index 07/1999; Full text 01/1998)

The Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology Index (5/1982; Full text 2/1995)

Chinese Sociology and Anthropology (Index/ full text 1/1999)

Cultural Anthropology (Index 01/1994; Full text 02/1998)

Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute (Index 03/1995; Full text 03/1995)

Oceania (12/1982; 09/1995)

International Bibliography of Social and Cultural Anthropology is one of the indexes and abstracts to be made available in electronic form as part of the RRIP trial. As noted above, Anthropological index online http://lucy.ukc.ac.uk/AIO.html can be accessed free of charge at present for educational non-commercial purposes (including private study).

Of the other similar services JSTOR (http://www.jstor.org) provides complete back files of four titles with a five year moving wall. Two titles are issued by academic presses (Annual Review of Anthropology and Current Anthropology) and the other two by a scholarly society (Anthropology Today and Proceedings of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland). EBSCOhost offers full text for over 1,200 journals with many dating back to 1990; however only abstracts and indexing appear to be available for titles such as American Anthropologist and American Ethnologist. ProQuest Direct similarly seems to offer more citations and abstracts although the Australian Journal of Anthropology, for example, is available in full text from 1997. There appear to be no relevant titles in the 565 journals available on Blackwell’s Electronic Journal Navigator (http://navigator.blackwell.co.uk/listJournals.html) or in the small number of titles available through Project Muse.

On the basis of this listing, there appears to be little likelihood of electronic sources making significant inroads in this field in the immediate future.

Proposed new subscriptions

This report recommends that the National Library should resume its subscriptions to the following three major titles (AUD$548), and try and obtain back issues if they are available direct from the relevant suppliers.

American Anthropologist ISSN 0002-7294. SSCI rank 7. Cancelled 1994. Faxon 06/007213. US$105 AUD$152

Current Anthropology. SSCI rank 1. Cancelled 1996. Ebsco NS1457/72 US$120 AUD$174

Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland. Formerly: Man. Cancelled 1994. SSCI rank 27. Blackwells NS587/68 UKP100 AUD$222

Two additional titles, American Antiquity and Man in India, were seriously considered, but are not recommended for renewal.

A request that the Library resume its subscription to American Antiquity was made by a Petherick reader. As a general principle the Library attempts to accommodate the requests of Petherick readers, provided they fall within the realm of the of the Collection Development Policy. Although the cost of a subscription to American Antiquity is only US$175, unlike monographs, were a certain amount of indulgence can be tolerated, serial subscriptions represent a serious long term commitment, and need to be entered into with extreme caution. According to this journal’s notes to contributors the main subject focus of this title is "the archaeology of the New World," that is North and South America. This region falls outside the scope of the National Library’s collecting policy. American Antiquity’s secondary sphere of interest, archaeological theory and methodology, is adequately served by the Library’s subscription to Antiquity, which has the added benefit of having a worldwide subject focus (including Australia).

Man in India (cancelled 1995; DK NS2763/75 was US$32) appears in Magazines for Libraries and is ranked 45 by SSCI. However this title appears inferior to the other Indian titles currently being received: Indian Anthropologist, Journal of the Anthropological Survey of India, Journal of the Indian Anthropological Society, South Asian Anthropologist and the Anthropological Survey of India Memoir. Eastern Anthropologist was also cancelled in 1994. As Man in India still appears to be received by four other libraries (ANU, NU, VMOU and WU) there appear to be adequate holdings in Australia for this title.
