Commonwealth of Australia Minister for Communications and the Arts, Minister for Tourism

Former Chief Justice Chairs the National Library Council

The Minister for Communications and the Arts, Michael Lee, today announced that former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, the Hon. Sir Anthony Frank Mason AC KBE, has been appointed Chairman of the Council of the National Library of Australia.

"I am delighted that Sir Anthony has accepted this appointment. His wide-ranging experience as Chief Justice and the diversity of his non-professional interests will be of great value to the work of the National Library Council" Mr Lee said.

In addition to his distinguished career in the law, Sir Anthony has served as Chancellor the Australian National University and the University of NSW, and is currently a National Fellow of the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University.

The National Library's primary role is to maintain and develop a national collection of materials which record and preserve the documentary heritage of all Australians. The Library complements the community and the Australian Library network. The Council as the government body, helps the Library achieve excellence and innovation in the delivery of these services and resources.

Mr Lee pointe out that Sir Anthony Mason, as the new Chairman, is succeeding another former Chief Justice of the High Court, Sir Ninian Stephen.

"Sir Ninian Stephen made a notable contribution to the activities of the National Library and I anticipate that Sir Anthony's term of office will be equally distinguished and far-sighted" Mr Lee said.
