MEDIA RELEASE - Friday, 7 April 2006
Established and emerging performers across music, dance and the spoken
word are being urged to apply for a National Folk Fellowship.
Offered jointly by the National Library of Australia and the National
Folk Festival, the annual Fellowship is a unique opportunity for
performers to research the National Library’s folk collections,
and to showcase their findings at a special performance and workshop at
the 2007 National
Folk Festival in Canberra.
Now in its third year, the Fellowship was established with the
aim of breathing new life into the myriad of traditional songs,
tunes, dance and spoken word gems held in the National Library’s folklore
archives.
The successful applicant will research any aspect of the folklore
collection with an overarching focus on reinterpreting Australia’s
music, dance and story-telling traditions.
The four-week residency guarantees recipients a performance at
the National Folk Festival, held over the Easter break each year,
and is undertaken over three to six months before the Festival to allow
time to
develop performances.
During the residency the Fellow will have special access to research
facilities, collections and sound recording studios. Also included
is some financial support for travel, accommodation and living expenses
up to $2,000.
The closing date for the 2007 Fellowship application is 30 June
2006.
