New National Resource Sharing Working Group

The National Library is sponsoring the formation of a working group to develop policies and examine interlending issues at a national level to ensure a robust and cost-effective interlending system to serve Australian libraries and their users.

The National Resource Sharing Working Group has broad terms of reference and will consider a wide range of the issues related to interlibrary loan and document delivery. These will include: performance standards, analysis of trends, best practice and bench marking, end user access and client satisfaction, and international efforts to improve ILL between countries. The group will also review the Australian Interlending Code and recommend any necessary amendments.

In setting up this group, the Library has received strong support from peak industry bodies and the Australian Library Collections Taskforce of the National Round Table on Access to Overseas Monographs. The working group will report through the Library to the Council of Australian State Libraries (CASL), the Council of Australian University Libraries (CAUL), and the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).

The Director-General has invited Ms Susan Magnay, Manager Document Delivery Service, State Library of NSW, to be the chair of the working group for the first year. The membership of the group will reflect a geographic as well as a sectoral balance to ensure that the views of all Australian library operators are considered. The National Library will provide initial funding and secretariat support for the group.
