More about the National Resource Sharing Group

The April issue of NLA Gateways carried the news that the Library has formed a National Resource Sharing Working Group to address a broad range of interlibrary loan and document delivery issues in Australia. The peak library bodies, the Council of Australian State Libraries, the Council of Australian University Librarians, the Australian Library and Information Association and the Australian Library Collections Task Force all supported the formation of the Group.

A number of factors including budgetary constraints, changes in publishing and changes in collecting from just-in-case to just-in-time have led to libraries placing a greater emphasis on resource sharing between libraries. As librarians are no doubt aware this has led to an increased focus on ILL/DD functions. In addition, ILL/DD practices have been changing with improvements in information technology and, particularly, use of Internet. There is also increasing concern among users and the library community about the effectiveness of the current interlending system in Australia.

Membership
The membership of the working group is composed of ILL practitioners and brings together a wide range of expertise and experience in interlending and document delivery in Australia. The membership reflects a geographic and sectoral balance to ensure that the views of the Australian library community as a whole are considered.

The members of the group are:

Susan Magnay (Chair), Manager, Document Delivery Service, State Library of New South Wales (NSW);
Dr Toby Burrows, Principal Librarian, Scholars Centre, University of Western Australia Library (WA);
Christine Cother, Flexible Delivery Service Librarian, University of South Australia Library (SA);
Margaret Gauld, Document Delivery Librarian, University of Queensland Library (QLD);
Sue Grimes, Librarian, Nepean Hospital Library, Western Area Health Service National Coordinator, GratisNet National Committee (NSW);
Sharon Howells, Interlibrary Services Co-ordinator, Auchmuty Library, University of Newcastle (NSW);
Cynthia Love, Manager, Service Development, CSIRO Information Technology Services (VIC);
Jody Rodas, ILL Officer, Waverley Library; Chair, Metropolitan Public Libraries Association Document Delivery Sub-committee (NSW);
Donna Runner, Resource Delivery Manager, Deakin University Library (VIC);
Charu Sood, Director, Interlending Services, NLA (Secretary) (ACT);
Joan Tucker, Co-ordinator, CIDER Project, CAVAL (VIC).

The group is committed to consulting widely and all committee members welcome comments on ILL issues. A Web site has been developed and can be found at http://www.nla.gov.au/initiatives/nrswg . It contains details on the terms of reference of the group, information about meetings and activities, and members contact details. The first meeting was held on 14 May 1999 and the minutes are now on the site.
